If it were easy, it wouldn’t be a challenge!

The restaurant business is very competitive and success is based on the ability to adapt to an ever changing situation. We believe there is value in providing restaurant owners with new, IoT (Internet of things) based tools that enable
them to improve efficiency and/or the guest experience.

And here comes your challenge:

"Identify an area connected to the use of Tork products in a restaurant environment where the use of new ways of capturing data or connectivity would improve the value for restaurant owners. Develop a technical solution for how this would be done that consists of both a (new) product and a way to use data."

The solution should be commercially viable, scalable and build equity for the Essity Tork brand.

  • Setting the Scene

BACKGROUND

Restaurants typically serve new customers everyday and are dependent on meeting the expectations of their customers. Today, the business is very labor intensive. Experience is also key in terms of running a restaurant and adapting to an ever-changing environment. Typically restaurants do not utilize automatic data capturing. We believe there is value in changing this, giving restaurant owners new, IoT based tools, which will enable them to adapt better and faster adapt as new situations develop.

The Challenge for Engineering 2/2

  • Setting the Scene

Scope

  • It is key that the proposed technical solution (that consists of both a (new) product and a way to capture data)  delivers on one or more, of the following:
    Efficiency: reducing time to prepare, serve and clean, speeding up the total time taken to serve a customer
    Hospitality: facilitating a high quality experience
    Staff motivation: reducing turnover, which will in turn reduce labor costs
    The solution can serve additional needs as well, and can be based on any process/area in the restaurant environment (guest area, washrooms, food preparation, etc).

Target audience

  • Restaurant managers/owners independent of segment (from Quick Service Restaurants to fine dining).
    Constraints
  • Technical details must use IoT technology based on battery powered sensors with a minimum lifetime of 2 years, connected to the cloud without interference with customer IT structure. The solution should include where the data will be shown to promote a desired behavioral change, including possible reward schemes.
