Internship in Chemical Engineering / Process Engineering – Modeling of gas treatment processes 58 views

Do you want to contribute to the development of sustainable process to decrease CO2 impact of the iron and steel industry? Do you want to make a real change?

ArcelorMittal is leading the decarbonization of the steel industry with a target of achieving CO2 neutrality by 2050.

Join ArcelorMittal Global R&D and envision the steel of tomorrow!

ArcelorMittal Global R&D is spanning the Globe with 12 sites dedicated to research (operating in process, products, application and steel solutions) within 7 countries and more than 20 nationalities. Because quality outcomes and innovation spirit depend on quality people, we seek to attract and nurture the best people to deliver superior and innovative solutions to our customers.

Would you want to integrate a multicultural company with challenging missions and passionate people, ArcelorMittal is for YOU! We are looking for Interns, VIE, apprentices willing to work in a multicultural environment in different domains.

The purpose of the mission:

ArcelorMittal is committed to minimize the environmental impact of its production processes while developing new sustainable routes to produce low carbon Iron and Steel. To achieve the carbon neutrality goals, ArcelorMittal is exploring different alternatives to replace the fossil fuels currently by renewable and sustainable energy sources.

The replacement of fossil coals by sustainable carbon sources as biomass issued coals requires to optimize the process parameters of the existing production plants, and in some cases, to revamp the process with newly designed process units.

During this internship your objective will be to model and test the limit conditions of the petrochemical gas treatment units of a cokemaking plant using a commercial process design software. You will stablish the energy and mass balances of the gas treatment process and you will optimize the process parameters of these units under different feed conditions (variable feedstock composition, flowrates, pressures, temperatures)…

Your mission: responsibilities and activities

The goal of the trainee is to model and to improve efficiency of gas treatment units for renewable gases upgrading.

The intern tasks will be:

  • Use process simulation software to build the flowsheet process of the actual gas treatment plant containing absorption columns, heat exchangers, distillation columns, etc.
  • Simulate the process and compare the simulation’s results with real plant data of each unit.
  • Adapt and optimize plant configuration for the upgrading of renewables gases.
  • Propose the best unit to improve scrubbing efficiency of tar compounds.

The environment:

The trainee will join the Sustainable Operation Team (based in Forbach, France) which is the part of the ArcelorMittal Global R&D. One of the Sustainable Operation Team’s goals is to develop the production process of fossil-free fuels and introduce innovative solutions at industrial scale. The trainee will be exposed to the world of industrial research along with basics of project management, communication of results and team working.

Required profile and skills:

  • Last year student in Process or Chemical Engineering    (Bac +5).
  • Experience using process simulation and modeling software (e.g. AVEVA process simulation, ASPEN Plus, Aspen HYSIS, PRO/II, ProSimPlus…).
  • Good knowledge on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mass and energy balances.
  • Good knowledge of the unit operations used in chemical and petrochemical plants.
  • Good background in organic chemistry.
  • Interest on data analysis and mathematical optimization tools.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Dynamic, persistent, working autonomously and taking initiative.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, team player.
  • Highly involved and motivated.
  • Working languages : English, French
